| What is a Healthy Phone? |
Make your own informed choices.
Technology and EMFs (Electromagnetic Fields) are everywhere, affecting us every minute of every day. The world now uses too much technology to ever think of this being reversed. Rather than decreasing, we will continue to be exposed to EMF more and more.
The use of electronics and technology and the resulting EMFs have grown exponentially since the second world war. Also since that time, perceptible changes in health patterns can be observed. Many experts try to link the two phenomena, but this link cannot be ‘categorically’ proven, at least not to the proof standards required for forcing action. If you think logically, you may ask ‘how could it?’ as we are all immersed in a sea of EMF every moment of every day. How could we prove an EMF affect?
At the current time, it is officially stated by the UK government that ‘if you use a mobile phone, you can choose to minimise your exposure to radio waves’ (Department of Health, Mobile phones and health). There are ways to mitigate some of the potential health risks of using mobile phones, so why not do it?

Where we are today in late 2007.
The mobile phone handset manufacturers
All mobile phones sold in the UK comply with the latest standards for radiation emissions. All handset manufacturers are very clear on this point as this is their legal requirement. But does this imply mobile handsets are 100% safe to use? The industry would like the consumer to come to this conclusion, but of course they cannot give this assurance. The manufacturers can be forgiven for taking this position; they have no alternative as they legally cannot guarantee 100% safety when they ‘don’t know’.
The health campaigners
Health campaigners will constantly tell us that excessive use of mobile phones is detrimental to health, but again, they lack the absolute, categorical proof to back it up. A growing body of evidence is beginning to show that there may be some truth in this analysis, but it is also indicating that we may have been looking in the wrong place. Current mobile phone radiation standards focus exclusively on Microwave, ionising radiation, where the current thinking is rather that the health problems could stem from the unregulated and ‘bio-active’ ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) and RF (Radio Frequencies).
The authorities
The advice on mobile phone use given by governmental authorities in the UK and Europe does not categorically state that mobile phones are safe. You may ask yourself why they will not do that?
Here is some of the latest published advice being given to consumers.
In the UK, the Department of Health advises in their literature;
- the latest information and advice based on both current knowledge and remaining uncertainties so that people can make their own informed choices;
- there is some evidence that changes in brain activity can occur below the current international radiation exposure guidelines, but it isn’t clear why
- recommends a “precautionary approach” to us the use of mobile phones until more research findings become available
- SAR values will be provided to consumers for each model of mobile phone sold in the UK. Users may wish to take account of these relative SAR values when choosing a mobile phone.
In some EU countries (including Austria, Germany and Sweden), the nation’s radiation advisory authorities recommend their citizens to minimise radiation levels.
Example of their recommendations are to;
- Use hands-free to decrease the radiation to the head
- Keep the mobile phone away from the body
- Do not telephone in a car without an external antenna.
Where is the comfort that the authorities believe mobile phones are 100% safe to use?
But where is the truth?
The one certain thing is that no-one knows for certain!!
We know that for mobile phones to work, they will create levels of EMF radiation. The good news is that mobile phone manufacturers are working actively to reduce the levels of radiation they produce. The regulated radiation (for microwaves) is known for each handset via its SAR value so you can make your own personal, informed choice.
The bad news is that the standards for mobile phone radiation do not cover the ELF to RF parts of the spectrum (whereas the standards for computer monitors do!!!). There is a clear discrepancy here between Health and Safety regulations for computer screens when they are compared to the current mobile phone standards (highlighted in the BioInitiative Report (August 2007)). Why would ‘damaging’ bioactive ELF radiation from computer screens be ‘not-damaging’ when coming from a mobile phone right next to your brain? (See CMO protection).
While we have this dilemma, it is clear that the more we protect ourselves from radiation of all sorts, the less potential long term risk we put ourselves at. Only in twenty years will we know the truth.

Will history repeat itself with EMFs?

For many years, smoking was considered harmless and consumption increased as it became “fashionable” to smoke. Only 20 years later did the impact of this on health become apparent, and 60 years before the authorities took action. more info... |
