| Choosing a Mobile Phone |
As you can read on the other pages of this website and the numerous links to other sites whether they be research, manufacturer, government or advisory body, no-one will categorically state that mobile phones are 100% safe to use. But to balance the argument, no governmental authority anywhere in the world has considered it necessary to place a health warning on a mobile phone package (like they do with smoking).
However, consider what happened with a substance such as asbestos. It was many, many decades before the links to the health issues became apparent and when the risks to health became “provable”. Nowadays, asbestos is never used under any circumstances.
Mobile phones have only been in common use for ten or so years, a very short time in terms of the biology and the development of health issues. The real truth and relationship between mobile phones, EMF and health will only become apparent over the next 20-30 years as long term health conditions ‘develop’ or ‘do not develop’ as the scenarios pan out.
Our ‘common sense’ view at Healthy Phones is as follows;
- Mobile Phones will continue to be used come what may, they are too deeply embedded in our culture to even contemplate to stop using them day-to-day
- The regulation standards for mobile phones require an urgent upgrade to accommodate ELF (extremely low frequency) radiation. This is currently ignored and is considered by many scientists to be the most likely to be the cause of bioactivity issues
- If you are going to buy a new mobile phone, consider and then choose the ‘healthiest’ option you can. Ensure you fit a CMO device.
- Understand and follow the practical advice on how to use a mobile phone for minimising exposure and implement this in your daily life.
- Try to protect your children with the lowest emission phones you can, it is them who will most likely suffer long term health consequences. Educate your children on how best to use a phone for the health considerations.
- As always, our freedoms mean it is up to every individual to make their own choice. Remember, even the government will not say that mobile phones are safe.
Choosing a Mobile Phone – Checklist;
Radiation Considerations
- Microwaves - SAR (Specific Absorption Rate);
- Choose a phone with the lowest SAR rating for the functions you want from your phone. This will immediately reduce your exposure to microwave radiation. This strategy is recommended by the Department of Health in the UK
- ELF (Extremely Low Frequencies) – the ‘bioactive’ frequencies.
- Selecting a phone from ‘Healthy Phones’ will give you a free CMO device to attach to your phone which has been shown to compensate for 80-90% of the ELF radiation. CMO will help to make a more ‘biologically’ healthy phone.
Design Considerations
- External Antenna
- Try to choose a mobile phone that has an external antenna. This keeps the radio waves as far away from your head as possible
- Hands Free Kits
- Generally, using a Bluetooth hands free kit is a very good idea as this keeps a great deal of radiation away from the area of the head. A study by William G. Scanlon of Queen's University in Belfast found that a typical Ericsson Bluetooth radio module generates an SAR of just 0.001 watts per kilogram.
- If you are worried about the health impact of radio waves, remember that the phone itself is a much greater source of concern than a Bluetooth headset. That's especially true because, when you're using Bluetooth, the mobile phone is likely positioned much farther from your body (and especially your brain) than when holding the phone up to your ear.
Shielding Devices
- We do not advise the use of shielding devices (for Microwave radiation) as research shows that the use of shields and the consequent reduction in microwaves does not affect the biological experimentation results. Rather than shielding, the best strategy appears to be to select a low SAR in the first instance and use a Bluetooth headset, ensuring a CMO is fitted to compensate for ELF and RF.
Choosing a Mobile Phone for a young person..
Use of mobile phones by young people (under the age of 16) ‘should be discouraged for non-essential calls’ (Department of Health, Mobile phones and health). While this advice is very good and appropriate, the fact of modern life is that 90% of teenagers under the age of 16 already own a mobile phone.
Therefore, for young people we strongly recommend following the advice above. Choose a low SAR phone and ensure that the CMO device is fitted to the phone. If you can, get your child to use a fashionable Bluetooth headset. Finally, print off the phone use tips sheet from this site and make sure our child implements this best practice.
